Handling Oil Absorbent Socks
Oil absorbent socks should be in easy reach wherever there’s a chance of a spill. These cleanup devices can handle large volumes of oil and, thus, they’re particularly well-suited to heavy industry, automotive garages and farm use. They allow the user to clean up the oil in a very passive way and they repel water, which makes sure that they don’t expend their volume collecting liquids that don’t merit this type of concern. They are among the easiest, most affordable and fastest ways to deal with collecting a volume of oil from a floor or other surface.
Oil absorbent socks need to be handled like any other product that’s used to clean up a hazardous spill. Principally, any materials used in the cleanup have to be considered to be contaminated with that material. For this reason, it’s important to adhere to regulations when disposing of these devices after their use. Make sure that qualified individuals attend to getting rid of these devices once they’ve been used. The advantage in these devices is that just about anyone can be trained how to deploy them in a few minutes. This makes them a valuable resource for every employee.
Oil absorbent socks are excellent for large spills, but may be overkill for smaller spills. In the latter case, oil absorbent pads can be used, which collect a smaller volume of oil, are more conveniently disposed of and are less expensive. For large spills, however, oil absorbent socks should be considered a good resource. Their mass also acts as a dam and can control the flow of oil beyond a certain point. These devices are also good choices for more aggressive liquids, such as acids and some corrosives, but the used socks have to be handled accordingly.
Some oil absorbent socks can be incinerated. Depending upon what materials they’ve been contaminated with, however, this may not be possible. Be sure to be aware of the materials in the sock when it’s taken away. The pads that will absorb any type of material are termed “universal”. There are also types available that will absorb oil and oil alone, and these are excellent choices for workplaces where this type of spill is of particular concern. For a workplace where hazardous materials of any type are a problem, absorbent socks are an excellent resource to make available to your employees.
