The loss of hearing can be an extremely difficult thing for any adult to face. Along with the frustration comes a peculiar desperation, and in some instances a deep seeded denial of the facts are not uncommon. Though do not despair. If caught early enough, most types of hearing loss can be slowed. But the longer you wait to get diagnosed and treated, the less likely you will be to prevent any further loss of your hearing.

Gradual degradation of your hearing is a natural phenomenon that affects a majority of adults as they approach their senior years. This condition, known as presbycusis, affects more than one-half of adults over the age of 75. There are several symptomatic warning signs that you should look for if you suspect that you or someone you love are losing the ability to hear.

Symptoms Of Hearing Loss

Muffled Sounds

When you lose your hearing, the speech of others tends to sound as though they are speaking to your from under a blanket, or with their hand over their mouth. Though they are not speaking this way, if other people sound like this, you may be loosing your hearing.

You Have Trouble Understanding Words

If you are having difficulty understanding words, notably against background noise or in a crowd of people, see a hearing specialist. This can be caused by several of the sources of hearing loss.

If The Person Frequently Asks Others To Repeat Themselves

If you suspect that your spouse or friend is suffering from hearing loss, and if they repeatedly ask others to clarify their words or to say them over again, this is a likely sign that the person is suffering from hearing loss. Doubly so if they ask others to repeat themselves more loudly, even in a quiet room.

A Person Needs To Listen To Television Or Radio At An Excessively Loud Volume

If you suspect that your spouse or friend is losing their hearing, and they all of a sudden need to listen to the television or radio at a noticeably higher volume than they previously did, ask them to consult a hearing specialist.

You Find Yourself Withdrawing From Conversations

If you find yourself no longer wanting to engage in conversation due to the frustration of not understanding the words that others are saying to you, chances are that you are losing your hearing.

You Avoid Social Situations All Together

If you no longer find yourself enthusiastic about engaging in social get-togethers, especially in public places, this is an extreme manifestation of adverse affects brought on by hearing loss. At this point, if the degeneration of your hearing is affecting your social life, your mental and emotional states are not far behind.

Undiagnosed and untreated cases of hearing loss can damage much more than just your hearing. It can lead to problems with depression and anxiety, it can contribute to auto immune and cardiopulmonary disorders, and it can severely inhibit your safety when you are alone, with no one to keep an eye on you.
