My Hearing: Revolutionized
It would be very easy for me to shake my finger at young people today and tell them they just do not know how good they have it. It would be easy for me to show my age and start telling stories that started out with a reminiscent “back in my day.” However, instead of doing all this, I think I will just share my experiences. This way, instead of sounding very old and more than a small amount accusatory, I will just tell my personal experiences and you will quickly see how you young people truly do not know how good you have it.
The very first time that I realized I had a hearing problem, I was fairly young, all things considered. I was only in my late thirties and that was three decades ago. I know that I did just give away my age after all, but that it alright. When I first recognized that I had trouble with hearing loss, I went through the usual denial that there was an issue, and then I eventually made the decision to get my hearing evaluated and see what could be done about it.
After an evaluation, it was determined that my problem could be corrected with an in-the ear hearing aid. Now, back then, these devices were certainly much different. First of all, the hearing aids were not specifically fitted correctly to each individual ear.
Instead, they were a standard shape, made of hard plastic and they were downright uncomfortable. In fact, there were times when my aid was a little painful and I did not even like wearing it. In addition, the device only gave me minor control over the volume and nothing else.
I spent most of the time trying to keep the thing from squealing and embarrassing me. I still could not hear well when I was in large groups of people, and I was just unhappy with my hearing aid. That was thirty years ago, though. Much has changed since back then, and I am very happy that they have.
While my natural hearing has deteriorated over the past three decades, I can only hear better now. With my current hearing aid, I am able to hear better than I did when I was thirty years old! The device fits comfortably in my ear, and it was even specially fitted to me. The material it is made from it much more comfortable in my ear and it does not cause any pain whatsoever.
In addition, my new aid has special controls so that I can change the setting depending on where I am. If I am in a busy restaurant, I can put it on the right setting so I can better hear the people I am talking with. It also has special modes for telephones and other special situations.
It is true that young people do not know how good they have it. There are whole generations of people who will never know what hearing aids used to be. Instead, they will just be able to enjoy the comfort and convenience of today’s devices.
