The Realities of a Solar Powered Cell Phone
Is there a widely available solar powered cell phone yet? Not really, but there are a large number of reliable and highly affordable solar powered mobile phone chargers. This means that anyone who needs to give their phone’s batteries a frequent “boost” can do so simply by placing the charger in a convenient pool of sunshine and then plugging their phone into it.
There are small units sized not much larger than the average phone, and then there are some excellent designs for those who also want to put a solar powered cell phone charger to use in other ways. For instance, many handheld GPS units can be easily plugged into a solar charger, and there are some companies who make small and flexible panels that can be stretched over a backpack and used to harvest solar energy for an array of devices.
Consider going on a backpacking or camping trip that will last for three or four days. No modern cell phone batteries will be able to endure this period of time without a recharge. This usually means that a mobile phone or a GPS become entirely useless after the second day of the trip, but with the use of a solar powered mobile phone charger the hiker could easily rely on their devices to get them safely through the experience.
Because there is currently such a wide array of cell phone manufacturers there are even some options in a “universal” solar powered charger. This device tends to have an assortment of exchangeable plugs that make it workable with almost any contemporary phone.
Does this mean that there are absolutely no cell phones available with built-in charging features? No, there are a few top of the line manufacturers already offering phones with such options. These tend to offer around ten minutes of talking time for every full hour of charging, but if the owner simply places the phone atop their work desk or along a sunny windowsill they may be able to avoid any sort of battery drop off throughout an entire day of use. Many of these designs are also environmentally friendly in other ways too. For example, one is made entirely from recycled bottles and has a walk vs. drive pedometer included in its design.
We live in a wonderful era for alternative energy supplies and anyone who is turned off by the cost and waste of cell phone and handheld device batteries may want to investigate their options for solar chargers.
