Why Does Hearing Loss Happen to Us?
It doesn’t seem fair, does it? Just as soon as you start to understand life, and make peace with all of the issues that have plagued you for many years, old age and death come around. Accepting death is difficult in its own right, but the slow and gradual decay of the human body is another tough blow to take. Take something as simple as your sense of sound. You never really miss it until it is gone. Suddenly, you are experiencing hearing loss and the world seems just a little less lovely.
It doesn’t have to be this way! There is good reason to keep an optimistic attitude about aging and about hearing. Did you know that although some 30 million Americans experience hearing loss that there are hearing aid solutions available? Before we discuss what can help you to restore your hearing, let’s first analyze why hearing problems occur. First, know that there are two major types of hearing loss: conductive and sensorineural.
The first of these, conductive hearing, is caused by physical abnormalities inside the ear. Whether these are caused by obstruction, genetics or illness, the problem is that sound waves are blocked from reaching into the inner ear area. The result is that there is a significant volume decrease. On the other hand, sensorineural hearing, involves the damage or trauma that affects the nerve endings inside the inner ear. Trauma can be cause by anything from loud noise on a consistent basis, to natural aging, to the use of some medications.
What are some of the most common causes of this “aural trauma” today? Just take a look at the world around you! Everyday we are bombarded by loud noises including airplanes flying overhead, loud traffic noises in the daytime and loud music from movies and music in our spare time. These sounds are unnaturally loud and can be damaging over a period of many years.
Furthermore, hearing loss can be caused by various physical traumas; for example, viruses, aging, disease, drugs, genetic illnesses, tumors and a physical blow to the head. What happens if you ignore the problems associated with hearing? This could lead to further loss of hearing, loss of speaking ability as well as depression and feelings of isolation.
What if you notice that you have a problem with hearing? Do not fear that you will have to undergo a complicated medical procedure. A hearing aid is a device that is simple to use and only requires a little bit of adjustment. These aids can be made to look very small or medium in size (the larger they are, the more powerful). They utilize digital technology to ensure superior performance.
The longer you wait to get help through a hearing device, the more damage you may be doing to your ears. Rather than think of your senior years as a depressing time, and rather than accepting hearing loss as a natural occurrence of age, take action to restore your hearing and feel complete again! A hearing aid is affordable, subtle (hardly noticeable in some cases) and is guaranteed to improve your hearing ability—and thus the overall quality of your life!
